Kids’ wear can make anyone gasp a loud ‘awwwwwww’. They’re cute!
Kids’ clothing is like a miniature version of adult clothing. But is it? Safety measures on your little one’s apparel are far more stringent than adult clothing, as it should be.
It is essential to make sure that the garments made and sold for children are devoid of any component that can be a safety hazard. Children from the age of 0 to 3 years are the most vulnerable and curious. Hence, it becomes important for parents and the brand to comply with safety measures, so the kid is not harmed in any way.
Government bodies imposed certain rules and guidelines for the design of kids’ wear and elements that might be attached to it. As parents, it is important for you to know if your favourite kids’ wear brand is meeting the criteria.
In the following listing, we are mentioning the most common rules/guidelines to be followed by kids wear brands:
The Trims, Attachments and Buttons
These are the knobs or disks attached to the garment usually for fastening and sometimes for decorative purposes. These must:
- Withstand 70N of force before breaking
- Should be devoid of any sharp edges
- Buttons or any other decorative item cannot resemble food, as there’s a risk that the kid might swallow it
- Attachment of any spare button or elements must be secured inside the garment, carefully
- Separate small elements or buttons must be secured carefully to reduce the chances of breakage
The Embellishments
There are several kinds of embellishment- Fabric, labels, badges, bows, sequins, beads etc. If all safety measures are not followed during the process of attaching it to a kid’s wear, it poses a risk to hurt the child. The following points must be taken into consideration for all kinds of embellishment to be used:
- Fabric embellishment must be heat sealed so the yarn does not run lose
- Labels and badges must be laser cut and must be devoid of any sharp edges
- Any stitching must be locked and must be done in the most durable way
- The waist embellishment must be secured tightly enough to withstand the force of 70N, and the length shouldn’t exceed 7.5 cm
- An embellishment around the hood area cannot be past 4cm for the loop and 2.5 cm for the tail
- Fabric or any other embellishment must be checked for colour fastness
The Zippers
Let’s just speak facts first- children’s clothing shouldn’t have zippers, but if they do, must always be of only top and approved quality. It also should be accompanied by necessary components like- a top stop, slider, bottom stop, tape etc. Here, we are listing a few other things that one must take into consideration:
- Must be able to withstand the force of 70N and must be 20mm wide
- The top coating must be free from any toxic substance and must only comply with the highest quality
- There must be an auto-lock or semi-auto-lock system as manual locking is not durable in kids’ clothing
- All the edges must be laser cut to check for any sharp edges
It’s not excessive if you just want to research everything and anything. It’s okay. Do not beat yourself up, Mumma! You’re doing fine. You got it and we’ve got you.
We promise to deliver you the best!
